Munnar is a breathtakingly beautiful and an idyllic tourist destination in Kerala. Set at an altitude of 6000 ft in Idukki district, Munnar was the favourite summer resort of the erstwhile British rulers in the colonial days. It's famous for tea plantations- pristine valleys and mountains. One can see the exotic species of flora and fauna in its wild sanctuaries and forests. Munnar is located 130 km from Kochi.
Munnar is the confluence of the three mountain river systems mudrapuzha, Nallathani, Kundala. It is dotted with lakes, reservoirs, mountains streams, scabrous rocks, wooded valleys and wavy green hills, which make it a fascinating holiday destination. The unending dominance of the tea plantations and the mountain flower Neelakkurinji that bloom once in 12 years are both synonymous landmarks of Munnar. It is one of the top tea production centres in all of India.
Munnar and the region around it varies in altitude from 2,000 m to 2,600m above mean sea level. Covering an area of 557 sq km, Munnar is blessed with pleasant climate.
Set amidst the Kannan Devan hills, Munnar a small hill station located on the eastern part of the state of Kerala is a major travel destination of South India. Placed at an altitude of 1524 m above sea level, it lies 130 kms east of Kochi and borders the state of Tamilnadu. Famous for the lush greenery surroundings, Munnar is breath takingly beautiful and is considered the heaven of peace and tranquillity. The confluence of the three mountain streams namely the Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala makes it a wonderful hill resort of the country.
Munnar was the favourite travel destination of the erst while British rulers in the colonial times. Covered by an unending expanse of tea plantations with valleys and mountains, it also preserves exotic species of flora and fauna along with the rare Neelakurunji plant offering a exhilarating colour to the mountain region. Next to it lies the Eravikulam National Park which is home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr seen roaming on the grasslands or climbing the undulating hills

Travel Attractions

Pothamadu: Pothaamedu, an important travel attraction of Munnar, located 6 km from Munnar offers a vibrant picture of the tea and coffee plantations along with cardamom. The hills with the mountains to its background offers a breathtaking scenery to the visitors ideal for trekking and a smooth stride along the mountains.
Anaimudi Peak: The Anaimudi Peak is considered the highest peak in South India. The peak rests at an elevation of over 2695 meters and a wonder as well a delight to the nature lovers. Travellers get to view the lovely sight from the low lying slopes and feel that their dream has been fulfilled.
Devikulam: The idyllic hill station is known for its velvety lawns hiding the exotic flora and fauna to its own. The cold breeze on the mountains gives an experience felt exclusively on the hills. In Devikullam lies the Sita Devi Lake with its mineral waters and a picturesque surrounding perfect for a picnic vacation. Apart from the sightseeing the place provides scope for trout fishing in the lake.
Pallivasal: Also a place of eminence, Pallivasal is the site of the first electric power project in the state of Kerala. The immensely beautiful place has apart from beauty provided light and brought glow to lakhs of families in the state of Kerala.
Attukal: Attakul, a long trekking destination is abundant with water falls and rolling hills which are a gift to the eyes of the visitors. Situated between the place of Munnar and Pallivasal, it is a location not to forgotten during the tour of the region.
Nyayamakad: A highly rewarding picnic spot, it too offers sight of the beauty of the waterfalls flowing downhill from a hight of above 1600 meters. There are few areas where trekking can also be done.
Chithirapuram: Primarily known for the lush green tea plantations is one of the travel attractions of Munnar, the place of Chithirapuram is populated by the little cottaged, bungalows, old playgrounds and courts.
Rajamala: A heritage site, it is the home to the rare Nilgiri tahr. The endangered mountain goat species are slowly and steadily on the verge of extinction and a few of them are only found in this locality. Reduced to small herds found exclusively in the Eravikulam-Rajamala region, today the population has gone down to 1317 from much more.
